The twenty-five volumes of the fourth edition, published in 1972 - 1984, were divided into an alphabetically ordered series of 18 volumes and a general series of six volumes which gave an account of the principles and methods of chemical engineering and process technology.
Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, Fifth Edition, was published from 1985 to 1996. This was the first edition published in the English language. By doing so, the publisher could offer an even better service to the international readership who already found the German editions of Ullmann's invaluable.
Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, Sixth Edition, was published in one go in December 2002. The 40 volumes including one index volume contain more than 800 major articles, organized in alphabetical order, written by more than 3,000 experts which provide the latest information from leading chemical companies. Topics have included municipal and domestic wastewater treatment and reuse using membrane bioreactors, nanofiltration of dye waste for water recovery and scale mitigation in reverse osmosis for flux enhancement.

This modern approch, based on the theory of the geometry of manifolds, distinguishes iteself from the traditional approach of standard textbooks. Geometrical considerations are emphasized throughout and include phase spaces and flows, vector fields, and Lie groups. The work includes a detailed discussion of qualitative methods of the theory of dynamical systems and of asymptotic methods like perturbation techniques, averaging, and adiabatic invariance.This book is an example of great scientific writing style. Not all the epsilon and deltas are spelled out, and yet the the proofs are nowhere short of rigorous. Besides, they convey insight and intuition: the opposite of Gallavotti's "the element of mechanics" (a very competent book, but obsessed with details). As all the great mathematicians, Arnold separates what's essential from what is not, what is interesting from what is pedantic. The result is a challenging, wonderful book.V.I Arnold is professor of Mathematics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. His research in the theory of differential equations (dynamical systems, stability theory, celestial and classical mechanics) has brought him world wide recognition as an outstanding mathematician and scientist.
