Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry
Copyright © 2007 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All Rights

Welcome to Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry in its seventh edition, the benchmark reference in chemistry and chemical and life-science engineering.
Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry is a state-of-the-art reference work detailing the science and technology in all areas of industrial chemistry. Subject areas include: inorganic and organic chemicals, advanced materials, pharmaceuticals, polymers and plastics, metals and alloys, biotechnology and biotechnological products, food chemistry, process engineering and unit operations, analytical methods, environmental protection, etc.
Fully international in scope and coverage, the contents have been compiled under the supervision of a renowned global Editorial Advisory Board. It contains nearly 1000 major articles, written by some 3,000 authors who are experts in their fields and affiliated to leading chemical companies or research institutes. With more than 16 million words, nearly 15,000 tables, 25,000 figures, and innumerable literature sources and cross-references, Ullmann's Encyclopedia offers a wealth of comprehensive and well-structured information on all facets of industrial chemistry.
First published in 1914 by Professor Fritz Ullmann in Berlin, the Enzyklopädie der Technischen Chemie (as the German title read) quickly became the standard reference work in industrial chemistry. Generations of chemists have since relied on Ullmann's as their prime reference source. Further German editions followed in 1928 - 1932 and 1951 - 1970. The twenty-five volumes of the fourth edition, published in 1972 - 1984, were divided into an alphabetically ordered series of 18 volumes and a general series of six volumes which gave an account of the principles and methods of chemical engineering and process technology.
Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, Fifth Edition, was published from 1985 to 1996. This was the first edition published in the English language. By doing so, the publisher could offer an even better service to the international readership who already found the German editions of Ullmann's invaluable.
Ullmann's Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, Sixth Edition, was published in one go in December 2002. The 40 volumes including one index volume contain more than 800 major articles, organized in alphabetical order, written by more than 3,000 experts which provide the latest information from leading chemical companies. Over 15,000 tables, 25,000 figures, and innumerable references on more than 30,000 printed pages offer a wealth of information to the reader.

Judd, Simon and Jefferson, Bruce (Editors), "Membranes for Industrial Wastewater Recovery"ISBN 1856173895 2003 PDF Eng 5.6 MB 318 pages

The subject area of this book is well defined in the title: membrane technology and its application to industrial water recycling. There can be little doubt of the importance of recycling of water contaminated by industrial activity, and it is hoped that the introduction to this book (Chapter 1) sufficiently emphasises this point. Stresses imposed on freshwater supplies continue to grow and environmental legislation relating to discharges becomes ever more rigorous.
Dr Judd is a Reader in Water Sciences at Cranfield University with over 15 years experience of industrial and academic R&D, having spent three years in nuclear waste management and two years in forensic science. In his current post he has conducted research into a wide range of chemical and, principally, membrane processes as applied to water and wastewater treatment. Topics have included municipal and domestic wastewater treatment and reuse using membrane bioreactors, nanofiltration of dye waste for water recovery and scale mitigation in reverse osmosis for flux enhancement.

Given that technologies for water purification are tending to become more efficient and generally cost-effective, it is inevitable that recovery and reuse of effluent will be more widespread in the future. It is also the case that membrane processes play a pivotal role in many reclamation and reuse schemes in industry. Their application across all industrial sectors has increased exponentially over the last twenty years and there is little sign of this growth abating.

On LISP: Advanced Techniques for Common LISP by Paul Graham Publisher: Prentice Hall; 1st edition (September 9, 1993) ISBN: 0130305529 413 pages Language: English PDF 1.0MB

The publisher, Prentice-Hall Engineering/Science/MathematicsWritten by a LISP expert, this is the most comprehensive tutorial available on the advanced LISP features and programming techniques. It shows how to program in the bottom-up style that is ideal for LISP programming, and includes a unique, practical collection of LISP programming techniques that shows how to take advantage of the language's design for highly efficient programming in a wide variety of (non-artificial intelligence) applications.Perhaps the author gives the best description of this book: "On Lisp deals mostly with the kinds of programs you could only write in Lisp." The book provides extensive information on the advanced features of Lisp, which are not found in other popular programming languages. After showing how flexibly functions can be manipulated, On Lisp moves on to the best discussion of macros available, which includes details of the possible pitfalls (various referential bugs, for example). The book concludes with a demonstration of various advanced constructs that can be implemented in Lisp using the tools developed in the earlier part of the book. As with his other book, ANSI Common Lisp, Graham writes in a fluid style that is a pleasure to read.

V. I. Arnold - Mathematical Metods of Classical Mechanics
Author: Vladimir I. Arnold Publisher: Springer-Verlag ISBN 0387968903 2nd. Ed. 1989 djvu, 519 pages language: english 4 MB

In this text, the author constructs the mathematical apparatus of classical mechanics from the beginning, examining all the basic problems in dynamics, including the theory of oscillations, the theory of rigid body motion, and the Hamiltonian formalism. This modern approch, based on the theory of the geometry of manifolds, distinguishes iteself from the traditional approach of standard textbooks. Geometrical considerations are emphasized throughout and include phase spaces and flows, vector fields, and Lie groups. The work includes a detailed discussion of qualitative methods of the theory of dynamical systems and of asymptotic methods like perturbation techniques, averaging, and adiabatic invariance. This book is an example of great scientific writing style. Not all the epsilon and deltas are spelled out, and yet the the proofs are nowhere short of rigorous. Besides, they convey insight and intuition: the opposite of Gallavotti's "the element of mechanics" (a very competent book, but obsessed with details). As all the great mathematicians, Arnold separates what's essential from what is not, what is interesting from what is pedantic. The result is a challenging, wonderful book.V.I Arnold is professor of Mathematics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. His research in the theory of differential equations (dynamical systems, stability theory, celestial and classical mechanics) has brought him world wide recognition as an outstanding mathematician and scientist. He was awarded the Lenin Prize for his work on stability theory with Kolmogorov.

Common Lisp: A Gentle Introduction to Symbolic Computation by David S. TouretzkyPublisher: John Wiley & Sons Inc (16 Dec 1984) ISBN 047160349X English PDF + Source File 900KB 398 pages

Here is the only book on LISP written for non-programmers. It is a crucial introductory text, using the most current and advanced LISP dialects. LISP, the preferred programming language for artificial intelligence research and cognitive science, is easier to teach than Pascal or FORTRAN and more powerful to program in than BASIC. LISP's interactive and intuitive nature makes it an especially good language for those first learning about computers and programming. Touretzky's introduction to LISP, written in a clear, non- technical style, eases the reader with a non-mathematical background into programmming. Each lesson is devoted to one main concept and concludes with a review of major ideas presented, followed by a list of the functions introduced. Among the outstanding features of this book are: an interactive approach that emphasizes reasoning about program behavior; many examples and short pen and pencil exercises as well as 'keyboard exercises' for learning on the computer terminal; an excellent treatment of recursion; appendices on LISP dialects and extensions to LISP.

C.C. Gaither, Alma E Cavazos-Gaither, Scientifically Speaking: A Dictionary of Quotations, 2nd Edition 2000Institute of Physics Publishing ISBN 075030636X 2000 PDF 1.9 MB 497 pages

The understanding of the history, the accomplishments and failures, and the meaning of science requires a knowledge of what has been said by the authoritative and the not so authoritative philosophers, novelists, playwrights, poets, scientists and laymen about science. Because of the multidisciplinary interrelationships that exist it is virtually impossible for an individual to keep abreast of the literature outside of their own particular specialization. With this in mind, Scientifically Speaking contains the words and wisdom of several hundred individuals— scientists, writers, philosophers, poets and academicians. The book assumes a particularly important role as a guide to what has been said from the past through to the present about science.

Six Sigma for Financial Professionals Wiley 2003 320 pages ISBN: 0471459518 1.05 MB PDF

With its celebrated success and proven results, the Six Sigma quality improvement methodology has expanded from its origins in the engineering industry to transform a wide variety of businesses, along the way developing a particular focus on customer service and satisfaction. While this evolution may seem to imply a shift of attention to the "ground floor" business-client interface, Six Sigma expert D. H. Stamatis draws his readers to the very peak of the organizational chart, explaining how executives and leaders make or break Six Sigma success with their every action and decision. Six Sigma for Financial Professionals is a comprehensive quality improvement guide for the financial industry, explaining the practice of Six Sigma methodology from top to bottom.Conceiving a vision without creating the plans and effort to achieve it results in "fantasy," the author writes, while advancing plans and effort without an overriding vision produces "drudgery." Only by articulating vision, plans, and effort together can a leader realize "success." Stamatis explains how executives can effectively shift paradigms within their organizations and empower their employees with the authority and motivation to achieve the required goal. He identifies six items that a leader must always keep in mind:* Customer orientation* Quality culture* Accountability* Products and services* Suppliers* TrainingThese are the critical arenas where an executive’s vision must transform into policy and practice. Stamatis then moves on to analyze Six Sigma principles in every aspect of a financial firm. Specific chapters address the fundamentals of Six Sigma, the DMAIC model, design, project management, statistics, roles and responsibilities, transactional business, and implementation strategy. In each chapter, Stamatis includes case studies that provide leadership road maps and other practical blueprints based on actual business experiences. The author concludes with a heavy emphasis on training, both in nuts-and-bolts Six Sigma implementation and in cultivating future leaders as part of a vital growth strategy for any firm. No business can afford to ignore the extraordinary promise and potential of quality improvement. Six Sigma for Financial Professionals will prove a powerful guide for CEOs, CFOs, and all corporate leaders.

Kieth Oldham, Jerome Spanier, "The Fractional Calculus : Theory and Applications of Differentiation and Integration to Arbitrary Order"Academic Press ISBN 0125255500 Year 1974 248 pages DjVu 1.7 MB

Not only does this text explain the theory underlying the properties of the generalized operator, but it also illustrates the wide variety of fields to which these ideas may be applied. Topics include integer order, simple and complex functions, semiderivatives and semiintegrals, and transcendental functions. 1974 edition. This was the first textbook devoted entirely to Fractional Calculus, and remains perhaps the best introduction to the field. It is a graduate level text for mathematicians, engineers and scientists, written in a clear pedagogical style, with excellent references and bibliography.A brief historical survey traces contributions as far back as Leibnitz. Basic results of the traditional integer-order differential and integral calculus are summarized, and properties of some special functions are examined, as a foundation for what follows. Later in the book, many advanced special functions are described in terms of the hypergeometric function. The notions of differentiation and integration are unified as differintegration. Grünwald's definition is presented which extends differintegration to non-integer orders, applicable to functions which satisfy certain conditions. Other definitions used historically are shown to be equivalent to, or special cases of the Grünwald definition. General properties of differintegration are examined, such as linearity and homogeneity. Results corresponding to those of traditional calculus are derived, such as Leibnitz' rule. Significant differences from traditional calculus are also shown, such as the lack of a useful chain rule. The preceding results are illustrated by example, using elementary algebraic, trigonometric, and logarithmic functions, and some special functions, such as hypergeometric, Bessel, and Heaviside. The semiderivative and semiintegral are accorded additional scrutiny, due to their importance in applications. Tables of formulae for semiderivative and semiintegral are provided for elementary functions and common special functions, as well as formulae valid for arbitrary functions. The LaPlace transform or tables of Riemann-Liouville transforms may be used to extend these tables.Practical techniques are presented both for numerical differintegration, suitable for computer implementation, and analog differentegration by means of electrical circuits. Some extraordinary fractional differential equations and semidifferential equations are solved analytically. Techniques of the fractional calculus are applied to a number of well-known problems in traditional calculus, including Abel's equation and Bessel's equation. The diffusion equation and its relatives are treated in a short chapter on practical applications of the fractional calculus. The usual formulations for planar and spherical geometries are examined, including incorporation of sources and sinks, and restriction to finite media. However, the most recent innovations in fractional calculus are not described, such as generalization to complex order. Also, although algorithms for evaluation of differintegrals may be easily derived from the definitions through the book, a set of exemplary pseudocode fragments would be most welcome. These minor flaws are understandable, given the 1974 vintage of the book. A little more material could have been given on Heaviside's Operational Calculus and its relationship to the fractional calculus - it exists only in the references. Similarly, although the link to Weyl calculus is noted, it is not elaborated. Finally, a few examples from rheology would enrich the applications section.

COMPARISON :
This book covers much the same area as Kenneth Miller and Bertram Ross in "An Introduction to the Fractional Calculus and Fractional Differential Equations", Wiley, 1993.Whereas Oldham and Spanier base their treatise largely on the Grünwald definition, Miller and Ross prefer to use the equivalent Riemann-Liouville definition. Both books contain comparable historical surveys, but Oldham and Spannier provide a more extensive bibliography, and employ a better pedagogical style. Miller and Ross provide results in forms better suited to computer implementation, and rely more on matrix techniques. Also, Miller and Ross provide a chapter on Weyl Calculus, and their practical examples include one from hydrology, but omit diffusion problems. Other than this, the two books share most of their strengths and have only a few weaknesses. (Reader on Amazon.com)

Vorticity and Turbulence

By Alexandre Joel Chorin
Book Description

This book provides an introduction to turbulence in vortex systems, and to turbulence theory for incompressible flow described in terms of the vorticity field. It is the author's hope that by the end of the book the reader will believe that these subjects are identical, and constitute a special case of fairly standard statistical mechanics, with both equilibrium and non-equilibrium aspects. The author's main goal is to relate turbulence to statistical mechanics. The book is organized as follows: the first three chapters constitute a fairly standard introduction to homogeneous turbulence in incompressible flow; a quick review of fluid mechanics; a summary of the appropriate Fourier theory; a summary of Kolmogorov's theory of the inertial range. The next four chapters present the statistical theory of vortex notion, and the vortex dynamics of turbulence. The book ends with the major conclusion that turbulence can no longer be viewed as incomprehensible. This book will be appropriate for professionals in the fields of applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, or physics, as well as graduate students in these noted areas.

Steel Construction Institute Staff, Steel Designers' Manual, 6th Edition

Blackwell Publishing ISBN: 1405134127 6 Ed. (May 1, 2005) 1368 pages PDF 7.5 MB

This classic manual on structural steel design provides a major source of reference for structural engineers and fabricators working with the leading construction material. Based fully on the concepts of limit state design, the manual has been revised to take account of the 2000 revisions to BS 5950. It also looks at new developments in structural steel, environmental issues and outlines the main requirements of the Eurocode on structural steel.

At the instigation of the Iron and Steel Federation, the late Bernard Godfrey began work in 1952 on the first edition of the Steel Designers’ Manual. As principal author he worked on the manuscript almost continuously for a period of two years. On many Friday evenings he would meet with his co-authors, Charles Gray, Lewis Kent and W.E. Mitchell to review progress and resolve outstanding technical problems. A remarkable book emerged.Within approximately 900 pages it was possible for the steel designer to find everything necessary to carry out the detailed design of most conventional steelwork. Although not intended as an analytical treatise, the book contained the best summary of methods of analysis then available. The standard solutions, influence lines and formulae for frames could be used by the ingenious designer to disentangle the analysis of the most complex structure. Information on element design was intermingled with guidance on the design of both overall structures and connections. It was a book to dip into rather than read from cover to cover. However well one thought one knew its contents, it was amazing how often a further reading would give some useful insight into current problems. Readers forgave its idiosyncrasies, especially in the order of presentation. How could anyone justify slipping a detailed treatment of angle struts between a very general discussion of space frames and an overall presentation on engineering workshop design? The book was very popular. It ran to four editions with numerous reprints in both hard and soft covers. Special versions were also produced for overseas markets. Each edition was updated by the introduction of new material from a variety of sources. However, the book gradually lost the coherence of its original authorship and it became clear in the 1980s that a more radical revision was required. After 36 very successful years it was decided to rewrite and re-order the book, while retaining its special character. This decision coincided with the formation of the Steel Construction Institute and it was given the task of co-ordinating this activity.

Marilyn Stokstad, Medieval Castles (Greenwood Guides to Historic Events of the Medieval World)
Greenwood Press ISBN 0313325251 2005 PDF 1.2 MB 250 pages

Acknowledged expert Marilyn Stokstad combines interpretive essays and original documents in English translation in order to examine the role of the castle in society as well as its use in war. Thirty illustrations provide valuable visual references, while 20 brief biographies of rulers, builders, and chroniclers allow one to glimpse into the lives of those who lived in and constructed these impressive structures. Seventy excerpted and annotated primary documents cover topics ranging from the defence of castles to the banquets thrown within them. A glossary of terms, annotated chronology, and index complete this useful work on a fascinating subject. Commencing with an overview of the military and social systems operating in the Middle Ages, Stokstad places castles and other fortified places into an appropriate context.

Readers are then guided through the development of early "motte and bailey" castles and the development of masonry towers and walls in the 11th and 12th centuries. Medieval Castles considers the military aspect of castles, including seige warfare and the architectural response to attack and defence, in the 12th and 13th centuries. It explores castles and citadels as local and regional government and economic centers in the 14th and 15th centuries. It also looks at the symbolic role of architecture and at castles as elite residences and settings for public display. A concluding interpretive essay looks at the impact of gunpowder on castles as well as our continuing fascination with the castle as a romantic fantasy of an idealized world.

Theory, methods and measuring instrumentation
Paolo L.Gatti and Vittorio Ferrari
This book deals primarily with fundamental aspects of engineering vibrations
within the framework of the linear theory. Although it is true that in practical
cases it is sometimes not easy to distinguish between linear and nonlinear
phenomena, the basic assumption throughout this text is that the principle
of superposition holds.
Without claim of completeness, the authors’ intention has been to discuss
a number of important topics of the subject matter by bringing together, in
book form, a central set of ideas, concepts and methods which form the
common background of real-world applications in disciplines such as
structural dynamics, mechanical, aerospace, automotive and civil engineering,
to name a few.

This fifth edition of Malcolm Shaw's bestselling textbook on international law provides a clear, authoritative and comprehensive introduction to the subject, fully revised and updated to Spring 2003. Basically preserving the structure which made the previous edition so successful, a new chapter on Inter-state Courts and Tribunals considers the role of the International Court of Justice and the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea, and there is a new chapter on international humanitarian law. Also examined are arbitration tribunals and the role of international institutions such as the WTO in resolving conflicts. The prosecution of individuals for violations of international law is examined. Additional coverage of events in Kosovo and Iraq analyses the questions of humanitarian intervention and the role of the UN. Written in a clear and accessible style, setting the subject firmly in the context of world politics and the economic and cultural influences affecting it, this book remains a highly readable and invaluable resource for students and practitioners alike. The scope of the text makes this essential reading for students of international law, international relations and the political sciences. Andrew Loomis, "Figure Drawing for all its Worth"
Publisher: Viking Adult ISBN: 067031255X 32nd Printing edition (January 1, 1971) PDF, 197 pages language: english 23,7 MB

Andrew Loomis is one of those rare, gifted artists who can articulate as clearly and truthfully using words as he could with lines. Using very simple tools to define the structure of the human body, essentially the skeleton as the foundation, he teaches how fantastically easy it is to draw the human body from any angle, in any action, and of any type.
I wish there were 10 stars.

Having stood the test of time, it was first published in the 30's, this book teaches you all that is there to figure drawing.

This is not one of those 'feel good' books that teaches you to do 'yet another thing'. This is a grand text. absolutely dedicated work, you can see the earnestness in Loomis' anxious words about getting across the details to the reader.

Kimon's 'Natural Way to Draw' is a classic in a different way, where he asks us to discover almost everything. Loomis gives us the crutches. I think a combination of these two approaches can be terrific. thats what I am finding out.

It has been very fullfilling , since I can pick up the artifacts of drawing the figure, and infact drawing anything for that matter, Loomis will lead you to explore and expand, the techniques are amazingly simple, yet absolutely powerful.

He reiterates to see the structure beneath anything, the skeleton, and how it aids us in construction.

Samer Akkach, Cosmology And Architecture In Premodern Islam: An Architectural Reading Of Mystical Ideas
State University of New York Press ISBN 0791464113 2005 PDF 3 MB 289 pages

Akkach seeped himself in the study of metaphysics, cosmology, and symbolism at the hands of Adrian Snodgrass and Peter Kollar of Sydney. He has also a great familiarity with the exposition of traditional doctrines by Rene Guenon, Frithjof Schuon, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, and others. These interests have led him to pen a work which is amazingly erudite, and fascinating. He has divided the work into four sections:
• 1) the discursive order, which deals with the study of symbolism in academia, and the various interpretations lended it by various modern academics, which is juxtaposed with the position of Traditionalists authors,
• 2) the metaphysical order, which discusses issues related to Sufi metaphysics, such as: Being and Presence, Primodiality, the metaphysics of the cosmogonic Word, the geometry of Being, and so forth,
• 3) the cosmological order, which deals with Archetypes, creation and the hierarchy of Being, and
• 4) the architectural order, which deals with the ordering of space in the Islamic architectural tradition, and how the Archetypes, and Sufi metaphysics in general are reflected in Islamic architecture.

Alejandro Bahamon, "New Hotels"

Collins Design 330 pages ISBN: 0060544694 PDF 20 Mb
Many of the hotels featured in this elegant volume are so extraordinarily posh that readers wishing to experience their comforts may well find their only opportunity is in these pages. The majority of the structures are modernist urban oases located throughout five continents, from London and Buenos Aires to Miami Beach and Italy. (Notably absent, however, are Asian hotels.) Colombian architect Bahamon showcases high-concept designer hotels with "an attention to personality coupled with an organic integration of the building with its history and surroundings." Fur-lined beds are a necessity at Sweden's chilly new Icehotel, for example, where the building itself and much of the decor is rendered from immense blocks of ice, while Berlin's Propeller Island City Lodge is "an art gallery where guests stay in constantly changing installations." In addition to the glossy photos highlighting soaring lobbies and luxurious suites, the page spreads offer brief histories on the hotels' structure and design. Though at its heart a book for designers and hoteliers, this volume will also give lay readers and armchair travelers plenty of sophisticated eye candy.

Engineering Mathematics, Fourth Edition

Paperback: 544 pages
Publisher: Newnes; 4 edition (May 2003)
Language: English
ISBN: 0750657766
Format: PDF
Size: 3.66 Mb

Engineering Mathematics is a comprehensive textbook for vocational courses and foundation modules at degree level. John Bird's approach, based on numerous worked examples supported by problems, is ideal for students of a wide range of abilities, and can be worked through at the student's own pace. Theory is kept to a minimum, placing a firm emphasis on problem-solving skills, and making this a thoroughly practical introduction to the core mathematics needed for engineering studies and practice.

The book presents a logical topic progression, rather than following the structure of a particular syllabus. However, coverage has been carefully matched to the two mathematics units within the new BTEC National specifications, and AVCE specifications. New sections on Boolean algebra, logic circuits matrices and determinants have been added to ensure full syllabus match.

Includes: 900 worked examples, 1700 further problems, 234 multiple choice questions (answers provided), and 16 assessment papers - ideal for use as tests or homework. These are the only problems where answers are not provided in the book. Full worked solutions are available to lecturers only as a free download from

AASHTO - A Policy On Geometric Design of Highways and Streets :

American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials2001 ISBN: 1-56051-156-7 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Executive Committee English 905 p PDF 24 MB

An AASHTO publication is typically developed through the following steps: (1) The
Committee selects subjects and broad outlines of material to be covered. (2) The appropriate
subcommittee and its task forces, in this case, the Subcommittee on Design and its Task Force on Geometric Design, assemble and analyze relevant data and prepare a tentative draft. Working meetings are held and revised drafts are prepared, as necessary, and reviewed by the
Subcommittee, until agreement is reached. (3) The manuscript is then submitted for approval by the Standing Committee on Highways and then the Executive Committee. Standards and policies must be adopted by a two-thirds vote by the Member Departments before publication. During the developmental process, comments are sought and considered from all the states, the Federal Highway Administration, and representatives of the American Public Works Association, the National Association of County Engineers, the National League of Cities, and other interested parties.

Foundation Analysis and Design
by BOWLES:

The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc 1997. ISBN 0-07-912247-7 (set) English 1169 p PDF 59 MB

This fifth edition continues the format of the previous four editions for providing current
state-of-art (SOA) and state-of-practice (SOP) methods in Foundation Engineering. From
author-user interaction I have concluded that SOP tends to lag SOA on the average of about 10 years. There is a range, however, where a few larger organizations are at the cutting edge of technology and many—particularly the smaller firms—are at varying intermediate stages.
This textbook, which is also widely used as a practitioner's reference, includes SOP
material but with major emphasis on SOA. The latter is accomplished by including a mix
of practice, "how to," and latest suggested design/analysis methodology. This produces a
text compatible with the general goals of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and other professional organizations, which have determined that technical graduates have a postgraduate period of only 5 to 7 years before obsolescence becomes a factor in their practice.
Design methods tend to vary between geographic regions, partly from instructors' influences and partly because there are few "design absolutes." As a consequence it is necessary to include the generally accepted alternative methods but to temper these with recommendations and suggestions on their use. This allows the user access to regional differences and provides "averaged" design results or the option to select the most appropriate alternative on a site-specific basis. Although these comments may appear overly practice-oriented, the fact is that the student must be aware of these real-world conflicts, geographical differences, and alternatives so as to be productive upon graduation.
This book emphasizes computer methods and the Finite-Element Method (FEM), involving matrix methods given in the previous editions, to reflect the widespread use of the personal computer and of the FEM in practice. Be aware, however, that the finite-element method does not have a unique definition. To some practitioners it is any mathematical representation of the continua (beams, plates, or solids) using discrete (or finite) elements. To other practitioners the FEM definition is reserved only for modeling the soil mass and the interfacing structural elements—sometimes this is called "soil-structure interaction" modeling.

Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice
by Terzaghi, Peck, Mesri:

A Wiley-Interscience Publication 1996 ISBN 0-47 1-08658-4 English 529 p PDF 54 MB

Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice, Third Edition, is divided into the following three parts:
I. Physical Properties of Soils.
11. Theoretical Soil Mechanics.
111. Problems of Design and Construction.
Part I deals with the physical and mechanical properties of homogeneous specimens of undisturbed and remolded soils. It discusses those properties which serve as convenient criteria for distinguishing between different soils and provides instructions for describing soils adequately. It also deals with those soil properties that have a direct bearing on the behavior of soil masses during and after construction operations. Part I also deals with the techniques for securing information about the soil conditions at the chosen site by boring, sounding, sampling, and testing. In spite of the great amount of time and labor involved in such exploratory work, the results commonly leave much room for interpretation.
Part I1 provides the reader with an elementary knowledge of the theories required for solving problems involving the stability or bearing capacity of soils or the interaction between soil and water. All these theories are based on radically simplifying assumptions regarding the mechanical and hydraulic properties of the soils. Nevertheless, when properly applied, the results obtained by means of these approximate procedures are accurate enough for most practical purposes.
Part I11 deals with the application of our present knowledge of soil behavior and of the theories of soil mechanics to design and construction in the field of foundation and earthwork engineering.

Earth***** Engineering Handbook, W. F. CHEN Hawaii University

CRC Press Taylor & Francis Group 2006 ISBN 0-8493-0068-1 English PDF 93 MB

The Handbook of Earth***** Engineering is a comprehensive reference and resource work covering the spectrum of disciplines required for mitigation of earth***** effects and design of earth*****-resistant structures. It has been written with the practitioner in mind. The focus is on a graduate engineer with a need for a single reference source to keep abreast of new techniques and practices, as well as review standard practices.
Earth***** engineering requires first of all knowledge of the geologic causes of, and expected shaking, liquefaction, and other effects that result from, a strong earth*****. It also requires a good understanding of the impacts these natural effects have on humankind, ranging from our buildings and other structures to the entire built and even social environment. In this regard, earth*****s are an almost unique natural phenomenon, in that they affect virtually everything within a region — even to furnishings within a building, and underground structures.
To this end, the Handbook is divided into five parts. Initially, Part I reviews the basic problem of earth*****s from a historical perspective, provides an overview of the framework within which earth***** risk is managed and an introduction to dynamics, since earth*****s are most fundamentally a dynamic process and problem. Part II of the Handbook addresses the geoscience aspects, covering geology, tectonics, liquefaction and tsunamis, focusing especially on earth***** strong ground motion.
Parts III and IV cover the broad spectrum of structures, from buildings built of steel, concrete, wood and masonry, to special structures such as bridges and equipment, to the variety of infrastructure called lifelines — that is, the water, power, transportation and other systems and components without which modern urban society cannot function. Earth***** structural engineering in the last decade has also seen a burst of new technology intended to avoid rather than resist the forces of earth*****s. These topics, base isolation and structural control, are also included.

Soil and Rock Construction Materials,
by G.H.McNally, Senior Lecturer in Engineering Geology, Department of Applied Geology,University of New South Wales

This book is intended to provide an introduction to the assessment, extraction, processing and environmental management of soil and rock construction materials, from a geological perspective. These geomaterials are sometimes referred to as low-cost resources, or as a category of industrial minerals. In Australia the producers of quarried products are known collectively as the extractive industries. Geomaterials differ from other mineral commodities in many ways: their widespread, though uneven, distribution; the large volumetric demand for them, concentrated around urban areas; their low ex-pit value, because substitutes can always be found; and, consequently, their sensitivity to transport costs. Large and high-quality geomaterial deposits far from cities are worthless, while inferior materials close to customers are often upgraded.
The traditional task of geologists in this industry was to locate and prove up deposits meeting specified criteria within acceptable hauling distance of the construction site. With the increasing scale of quarry operations and rising public concern over landscape degradation, this role has expanded. Geologists are now generally part of a project team, in which they may be asked to give advice on the geological aspects of product quality control, blast design, crusher selection, quarry restoration and so on. They will be expected to know enough about downstream processing to prepare a preliminary pit layout and to suggest how the properties of the raw material are likely to influence this.

Elastoplasticity Theory,
by Vlado A. Lubarda, Ph.D, Stanford University

CRC Press Taylor & Francis Group 2006 ISBN 0-8493-1138-1 English PDF 8 MB

The book consists of three parts. The first part is an introduction to nonlinear continuum mechanics. After tensor preliminaries in Chapter 1, selected topics of kinematics and kinetics of deformation are presented in Chapters 2 and 3. Hill’s theory of conjugate stress and strain measures is used. Chapter 4 is a brief treatment of the thermodynamics of deformation, with an accent given to formulation with internal state variables.
Part 2 of the book is devoted to nonlinear elasticity. Constitutive theory of finite strain elasticity is presented in Chapter 5, and its rate-type formulation in Chapter 6. An analysis of elastic stability at finite strain is given in Chapter 7. Nonlinear elasticity is included in the book because it illustrates an application of many general concepts from Part 1, and because it is combined in Part 3 with finite deformation plasticity to derive general constitutive structure of finite deformation elastoplasticity.
Part 3 is the largest part of the book, consisting of seven chapters on plasticity. Chapter 8 is an analysis of the constitutive framework for rate-independent and rate-dependent plasticity. The postulates of Drucker and Ilyushin are discussed in the context of finite strain. Derivation of elastoplastic constitutive equations for various phenomenological models of material response is presented in Chapter 9. Formulations in stress and strain space, using the yield surfaces with and without vertices, are given. Isotropic, kinematic, combined isotropic–kinematic and multisurface hardening models are introduced. Pressure-dependent plasticity and non-associative flow rules are then discussed. Fundamental aspects of thermoplasticity, rate-dependent plasticity and deformation theory of plasticity are also included. Hill’s theory of uniqueness and plastic stability is presented in Chapter 10, together with an analysis of eigenmodal deformations and acceleration waves in elastoplastic solids. Rice’s treatment of plastic flow localization in pressure-insensitive and pressure-sensitive materials is then given. Chapter 11 is devoted to formulation of the constitutive theory of elastoplasticity in the framework of Lee’s multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient into its elastic and plastic parts. Isotropic and orthotropic materials are considered, with an introductory treatment of damage-elastoplasticity. The theory of monocrystalline plasticity is presented in Chapter 12. Crystallographic slip is assumed to be the only mechanism of plastic deformation. Hardening rules and uniqueness of slip rates are examined. Specific forms of constitutive equations for rate-independent and rate-dependent crystals are derived. Chapter 13 covers some fundamental topics of micro-to-macro transition in the constitutive description. The analysis is aimed toward the derivation of constitutive equations for a polycrystalline aggregate from known constitutive equations of single crystals. The fourteenth, and final chapter of the book is devoted to approximate models of polycrystalline plasticity.

Stress Concentration Factors:
by Pilkey, Walter D.

A Wiley-lnterscience Publication 1997 ISBN 0-471-53849-3 English PDF 20 MB

Rudolph Earl Peterson (1901-1982) has been Mr. Stress Concentration for the past half century. Only after preparing this edition of this book has it become evident how much effort he put into his two previous books: Stress Concentration Design Factors (1953) and Stress Concentration Factors (1974). These were carefully crafted treatises. Much of the material from these books has been retained intact for the present edition. Stress concentration charts not retained are identified in the text so that interested readers can refer to the earlier editions.
The present book contains some recently developed stress concentration factors, as well as most of the charts from the previous editions. Moreover there is considerable material on how to perform computer analyses of stress concentrations and how to design to reduce stress concentration. Example calculations on the use of the stress concentration charts have been included in this edition.
One of the objectives of application of stress concentration factors is to achieve better balanced designs1 of structures and machines. This can lead to conserving materials, cost reduction, and achieving lighter and more efficient apparatus. Chapter 6, with the computational formulation for design of systems with potential stress concentration problems, is intended to be used to assist in the design process.

Structural and Stress Analysis,
by Dr. T. H. G. MEGSON, Senior Lecturer in Civil Engineering, University of Leeds

Butterworth-Heineman ISBN 0 340 63196 1 English PDF 22 MB

The purpose of this book is to provide, in a unified form, a text covering the associated topics of structural and stress analysis for students of civil engineering during the first two years of their degree course. The book is also intended for students studying for Higher National Diplomas, Higher National Certificates and related courses in civil engineering.
Frequently, textbooks on these topics concentrate on structural analysis or stress analysis and often they are lectured as two separate courses. There is, however, a degree of overlap between the two subjects and, moreover, they are closely related. In this book, therefore, they are presented in a unified form which illustrates their interdependence. This is particularly important at the first-year level where there is a tendency for students to ‘compartmentalize’ subjects so that an overall appreciation of the subject is lost

Urban Transportation Networks:

PRENTICE-HALL, INC., 1985 ISBN 0-13-939729 English PDF 415 p 23 MB

The amount of travel taking place at a given moment on any street, intersection, or transit line in an urban area is the result of many individuals' decisions. Travelers choose if and when to take a trip for some purpose, which mode of transportation to use (e.g., whether to drive or take public transit), where to go, and which way to get there. These decisions depend, in part, on how congested the transportation system is and where the congested points are. Congestion at any point of the transportation system, however, depends on the amount of travel through that point. This book describes how these interactions between congestion and travel decisions can be modeled and solved simultaneously to obtain the flow pattern throughout the urban transportation network.

The CRC Handbook of Thermal Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) Frank Kreith

* Publisher: Springer Verlag (February 1, 2000) * ISBN: 3540663495 * Size : 18 Mb * Format : pdf

Although various aspects of what is now known as thermodynamics have been of interest since antiquity, formal study began only in the early 19th century through consideration of the motive power of heat: the capacity of hot bodies to produce work. Today the scope is larger, dealing generally with energy and entropy, and with relationships among the properties of matter. Moreover, in the past 25 years engineering thermodynamics has undergone a revolution, both in terms of the presentation of fundamentals and in the manner that it is applied. In particular, the second law of thermodynamics has emerged as an effective tool for engineering analysis and design.

Multifield Problems in Solid and Fluid Mechanics
(Lecture Notes in Applied and Computational Mechanics)

Pages:571
PDF
15 MB

Understanding the interaction between various processes is a pre-requisite for solving problems in natural and engineering sciences. Many phenomena can not be described by concentrating on them in isolation - therefore multifield models and concepts that include various kinds of field problems and processes are needed. This book summarizes the main scientific results of the Collaborative Research Center on Multifield Problems in Continuum Mechanics (Sonderforschungsbereich Mehrfeldprobleme in der Kontinuumsmechanik, SFB 404) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 1995-2006.
The book is divided into three main sections:
A: Volume-Coupled Problems, devoted to fields which are coupled inside the processing domain or volume,
B: Boundary-Coupled Problems, here physical fields and processes are coupled via domain boundaries,
C: Fundamental Methods, search into the mathematical concepts and backgrounds of multifield and multiscale modeling.

Fluid Mechanics of Flow Metering (1st edition),
By Volker Hans, Ernst von Lavante, Franz Peters,& Venkatesa Vasanta Ram

Pages:256
PDF
11 MB

Flow meters measure the volumetric flow rate in a pipeline. Most meters are based on deriving a signal from the fluid flow and calibrating the signal against the volumetric flow rate. The calibration is done in fully-developed flow, and the same state of flow must exist at the meter’s position when it is in practical use. Because the field of flow metering has been neglected by fluid mechanicists for a long time, this book addresses two major fluid mechanical problems in flow metering: the analysis of signal generation in turbulent pipe flow, which explains the function of the meter beyond a simple calibration, and the possible use of a meter in non-developed flows. These problems are investigated with reference to, and examples from, a variety of meters, e.g. ultrasound cross-correlation meters, vortex meters, and turbine meters. Studying these problems requires consideration of specific phenomena in turbulent non-developed pipe flow, as caused by installations, and finding special solutions with signal processing, both of which are included in the book.

Fluid Mechanics, 2nd Edition

Pages:700,

By Pijush K. Kundu

This is the most comprehensive introductory graduate or advanced undergraduate text in fluid mechanics available. It builds from the fundamentals, often in a very general way, to widespread applications to technology and geophysics. In most areas, an understanding of this book can be followed up by specialized monographs and the research literature. The material added to this new edition will provide insights gathered over 45 years of studying fluid mechanics. Many of these insights, such as universal dimensionless similarity scaling for the laminar boundary layer equations, are available nowhere else. Likewise for the generalized vector field derivatives. Other material, such as the generalized stream function treatment, shows how stream functions may be used in three-dimensional flows. The CFD chapter enables computations of some simple flows and provides entrée to more advanced literature.

*New and generalized treatment of similar laminar boundary layers.
*Generalized treatment of streamfunctions forthree-dimensional flow .
*Generalized treatment of vector field derivatives.
*Expanded coverage of gas dynamics.*New introduction to computational fluid dynamics.
*New generalized treatment of boundary conditions in fluid mechanics.*Expanded treatment of viscous flow with more examples.

The Safe Drinking Water Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate drinking-water quality, including setting a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for radon, an acknowledged carcinogen, to restrict the exposure of the public. The book presents a valuable synthesis of information of the total inhalation and ingestion risks of radon in public drinking water, including comprehensive reviews of data on the transfer of radon from water to air and on ambient levels of radon in the U.S. outdoors. It also presents a new analysis of a biokinetic model developed to determine the risks of ingestion of radon; the book also reviews both inhalation risks and the carcinogenesis process. The book includes discussions and example scenarios for quantifying the reduction in health risk which might be achieved under a multimedia (water and air) mitigation program to reduce public exposure to radon. This volume, reflecting research and analysis mandated by 1996 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act, provides comment on a variety of methods to reduce radon entry into homes and the concentrations of radon in indoor air and in water. The information contained in this book is intended to provide information that EPA will need to set a new MCL, which EPA is required to set in 1999

The provision of safe drinking water has been an important factor in the improvement of the health status of U.S. communities since the turn of the last century. Nonetheless, outbreaks of waterborne disease and incidences of chemical contamination of drinking water continue to occur.Setting Priorities for Drinking Water Contaminants recommends a new process for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to use in deciding which potential drinking water contaminants should be regulated in public water supplies to provide the greatest protection against waterborne illnesses. The book covers chemical and microbiological contaminants and includes a historical review of past approaches to setting priorities for drinking water contaminants and other environmental pollutants. It emphasizes the need for expert judgment in this process and for a conservative approach that considers public health protection as the first priority.

Searching for Water in the Universe

Pages:193

In Searching for Water in the Solar System, Thérèse Encrenaz takes the reader on a journey through the Universe in search of water. She begins by introducing the most well-known of molecule H2O, its physical and chemical characteristics and its cosmic Formation and abundance. She examines the methods by which the presence of water is detected, both within the solar system and beyond. One by one she visits a diversity of locations in the cosmos, from the nearest planets to the furthest galaxies, where water has been discovered. In the formation of the solar system, she explains how the water molecule played a major part, with the so-called ‘ice frontier’ determining the natures of the terrestrial and giant planets. The book explores the presence of water in the various bodies of the Solar System: in the giant planets, with their rings and systems of satellites, in comets, asteroids and in the terrestrial planets. By tracing the history of water in the atmospheres of Mars, Venus and the Earth, the author explains how small differences in temperatures, causing water to exist in different states on different planets – vapour on Venus, liquid on Earth and solid ice on Mars – have led to a great divergence in the evolutions of the three planets. The story of water on Mars, an aspect of great topical interest, offers an insight into the possibility (still only a theory) that there was once life on that planet. The book concludes by looking at the important role played by water in studies of habitable exoplanets.

Turbomachines are those in which energy is transferred to or from a continuously moving fluid by the motion of a rotating element. Some of the most common and important machines used in engineering and industry fall into this category, including those which absorb power (and thereby increase fluid pressure), such as fans, compressors and pumps. Also included are equally vital varieties of machines which generate power from the expansion of fluids to lower pressures such as hydraulic, steam and gas turbines. This general definition embraces a number of devices that are classified as 'open', such as propellers, windmills and unshrouded fans. The machines examined here are those defined as 'closed', where a finite quantity of fluid can be considered to pass through the machine in unit time, for it is these which are of the most interest to students and professionals in the fields of mechanical, chemical, and plant engineering. It is in these areas that the devices that form the subject matter of this book find their most important applications, making this treatment of vital importance to anyone working in or studying them.Example questions and answers throughoutIncludes more new material on axial flow compressors and pumps

Handbook of Electrical Design Details 2nd Edition
Author: Neil Sclater & John E. Traister Publisher: McGraw Hill ISBN: 0-07-142579-9 1998 Year pdf, 455 pages language: english 7 MB

This is the second edition of the Handbook of Electrical Design Details (HEDD), originally published in 1997. It is a well-illustrated reference book on electrical power and lighting—how it is generated, transmitted, distributed, and used. Considerable new information has been added in this edition but it is a smaller volume, making it more user-friendly and easier to keep on a desk or shelf. Among the topics new to this edition are computer-aided electrical drawing (CAD), basic switch and receptacle circuit wiring, outdoor low-voltage wiring, telephone and structured wiring, and electrical surge protection.
This book begins with a discussion of electrical drawing and symbols and the importance of specifications in electrical projects. The chapters that follow cover power generation, transmission, and distribution. Design details of generators and transformers and their role in delivering electric power to consumers’ homes or buildings are included. Aerial and buried service entrances are explained and illustrated, as are main panels or loadcenters and the principles of earth grounding.
Properties of wire and cable are presented, and the dimensions and the details of basic electrical wiring devices are described and illustrated. The rules for installing branch circuit wiring are given along with an example of a load calculation and the reasons for load balancing. Extensive coverage is given to lighting, lamps, and indoor and outdoor lighting design. Other chapters explain telephone and structured wiring, electric motors, emergency and standby electrical systems, and the essentials of surge protection.
This edition of HEDD makes many references to the National Electrical Code (NEC)* on all topics governed by the code, such as wiring protection, wiring methods and materials, and standard equipment, where appropriate for reader guidance. In the chapters on wire, cable, and wiring devices, individual drawings represent whole classes of standard products such as switches, receptacles, and lamps, replacing the many repetitive catalog pages that appeared in the first edition.
Each chapter begins with a content summary called “Contents at a Glance” and an Overview of the chapter. In addition, there are separate glossaries of technical terms at the ends of the chapters on transformers, electrical service entrance, wiring, lighting, motors, telecommunications, emergency and standby systems, and surge protection, for handy reference and quick memory refreshing.
This second edition of HEDD has been written in an informal descriptive style, with minimal use of mathematics. The readers most likely to benefit from this book are electrical contractors, electricians, and instructors. Others who will find this volume helpful are those employed in the electrical industry in manufacturing, service,

Practical Troubleshooting of Electrical Equipment and Control Circuits

Author: Mark Brown, Jawahar Rawtani, Dinesh Patil Publisher: Newnes, An imprint of Elsevier ISBN: 0 7506 6278 6 2005 pdf, 248 pages language: english 10 MB

There is a large gap between the theory of electron flow, magnetic fields and that of troubleshooting electrical equipment and control circuits in the plant. In this book, we try to avoid or at least minimize discussions on the theory and instead focus on showing you how to troubleshoot electrical equipment and control circuits. The book helps to increase your knowledge and skills in improving equipment productivity whilst reducing maintenance costs. Reading this book will help you identify, prevent and fix common electrical equipment and control circuits. The focus is ‘outside the box’. The emphasis is on practical issues that go beyond typical electrical theory and focus on providing those that attend with the necessary toolbox of skills in solving electrical problems, ranging from control circuits to motors and variable speed drives.
This book focuses on the main issues of troubleshooting electrical equipment and control circuits of today to enable you to walk onto your plant or facility to troubleshoot and fix problems as quickly as possible. This is not an advanced book but one aimed at the fundamentals of troubleshooting systems.
The book is very practical in its approach to troubleshooting and the examples you will be shown are applicable to any facility.

High Voltage Engineering Fundamentals

Author: E. Kuffel, Dean Emeritus, University of Manitoba, W.S. Zaengl, Professor Emeritus, Electrical Engineering Dept., Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, Switzerland, J. Kuffel Manager of High Voltage and Current Laboratories, Ontario Hydro Technologies, Toronto, Canada Publisher: Newnes, An imprint of Butterworth-Heinemann ISBN: 0 7506 3634 3 2000 pdf, 552 pages language: english 5 MB

The first edition as well as its forerunner of Kuffel and Abdullah published in 1970 and their translations into Japanese and Chinese languages have enjoyed wide international acceptance as basic textbooks in teaching senior undergraduate and postgraduate courses in High-Voltage Engineering. Both texts have also been extensively used by practising engineers engaged in the design and operation of high-voltage equipment. Over the years the authors have received numerous comments from the text’s users with helpful suggestions for improvements. These have been incorporated in the present edition. Major revisions and expansion of several chapters have been made to update the continued progress and developments in high-voltage engineering over the past two decades.
As in the previous edition, the principal objective of the current text is to cover the fundamentals of high-voltage laboratory techniques, to provide an understanding of high-voltage phenomena, and to present the basics of highvoltage insulation design together with the analytical and modern numerical tools available to high-voltage equipment designers.
Chapter 1 presents an introduction to high-voltage engineering including the concepts of power transmission, voltage stress, and testing with various types of voltage. Chapter 2 provides a description of the apparatus used in the generation of a.c., d.c., and impulse voltages. These first two introductory chapters have been reincorporated into the current revision with minor changes.
Chapter 3 deals with the topic of high-voltage measurements. It has undergone major revisions in content to reflect the replacement of analogue instrumentation with digitally based instruments. Fundamental operating principles of digital recorders used in high-voltage measurements are described, and the characteristics of digital instrumentation appropriate for use in impulse testing are explained.
Chapter 4 covers the application of numerical methods in electrical stress calculations. It incorporates much of the contents of the previous text, but the section on analogue methods has been replaced by a description of the more current boundary element method.
Chapter 5 of the previous edition dealt with the breakdown of gaseous, liquid, and solid insulation. In the new edition these topics are described in two chapters. The new Chapter 5 covers the electrical breakdown of gases. The breakdown of liquid and solid dielectrics is presented in Chapter 6 of the current edition.
Chapter 7 of the new text represents an expansion of Chapter 6 of the previous book. The additional areas covered comprise a short but fundamental introduction to dielectric properties of materials, diagnostic test methods, and non-destructive tests applicable also to on-site monitoring of power equipment. The expanded scope is a reflection of the growing interest in and development of on-site diagnostic testing techniques within the electrical power industry. This area represents what is perhaps the most quickly evolving aspect of highvoltage testing. The current drive towards deregulation of the power industry, combined with the fact that much of the apparatus making up the world’s electrical generation and delivery systems is ageing, has resulted in a pressing need for the development of in-service or at least on-site test methods which can be applied to define the state of various types of system assets. Assessment of the remaining life of major assets and development of maintenance practices optimized both from the technical and economic viewpoints have become critical factors in the operation of today’s electric power systems. Chapter 7 gives an introduction and overview of the fundamental aspects of on-site test methods with some practical examples illustrating current practices.
Chapter 8 is an expansion of Chapter 7 from the previous edition. However, in addition to the topics of lightning phenomena, switching overvoltages and insulation coordination, it covers statistically based laboratory impulse test methods and gives an overview of metal oxide surge arresters. The statistical impulse test methods described are basic tools used in the application of insulation coordination concepts. As such, an understanding of these methods leads to clearer understanding of the basis of insulation coordination. Similarly, an understanding of the operation and application of metal oxide arresters is an integral part of today’s insulation coordination techniques.
Chapter 9 describes the design, performance, application and testing of outdoor insulators. Both ceramic and composite insulators are included. Outdoor insulators represent one of the most critical components of transmission and distribution systems. While there is significant experience in the use of ceramic insulators, composite insulators represent a relatively new and quickly evolving technology that offers a number of performance advantages over the conventional ceramic alternative. Their use and importance will continue to increase and therefore merits particular attention.

An Introduction to Microelectromechanical Systems Engineering

Author: Nadim Maluf, Kirt Williams Publisher: Artech House, Inc. ISBN: 1-58053-590-9 2004 pdf, 304 pages language: english 4 MB

The acronym for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) was officially adopted by a group of about 80 zealots at a crowded meeting in Salt Lake City in 1989 called the Micro Tele-Operated Robotics Workshop. I was there to present an invited paper that claimed MEMS should be used to fabricate resonant structures for the purposes of timekeeping, and I was privileged to be part of this group of visionaries for one and a half exciting days. The proceedings may not be in print any longer. However, I recall that they were given an Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) catalog number of 89TH0249-3. Discussion at the workshop about the name of this new field of research raged for over an hour, and several acronyms were offered, debated, and rejected. When the dust settled, I recall that Professor Roger Howe of the University of California at Berkeley stood up and announced, “Well, then, the name is MEMS.” In this way, the group came to consensus. The research they conducted, unique to any currently being conducted in the United States (or the world for that matter) would hereafter be known as “MEMS.”

Every day countless kilometres of steel pipelines are installed worldwide for the most varied civil and industrial uses. They form real networks comparable to a system of road networks, which, although not so obvious, are definitely much more intricate and carry fluids that have become essential for us. To comply with technical specifications and fulfill the necessary safety requisites, special materials and welding processes which have evolved with the sector have been developed in recent years. The main welding process used to install the pipelines is manual welding with coated electrode, which, thanks to its ease and versatility, is still the one most used.

Elementary Linear Algebra
Author : William L. Perry, Department of Mathematics, Texas A&M University
Publication Date : 2001

Linear algebra, as we know it today, furnishes a beautiful mathematical structure; the integral parts of the structure are powerful tools for engineers, scientists, and mathematicians. Students in these diverse fields come to linear algebra with a common background: They have learned mathematics by working problems and studying examples. With this idea in mind, I have drawn the reader's attention in this text to what I consider to be the five basic problems of linear algebra:
1. The problem of solving linear equations
2. The problem of constructing a basis for a vector space
3. The problem of constructing a matrix which represents a linear transformation
4. The eigenvalue-eigenvector problem
5. The diagonalization problem These problems give the students landmarks to look for and skills to master in the course.

Of course, the solutions of the five basic problems result in the important theorems of linear algebra.
These are stated accurately and then proved unless the proof lies beyond the scope of elementary linear algebra. My hope is that the reader will come to see the structure of linear algebra as supported by the five main beams of the five basic problems with the detail fleshed out by examples, applications, and theorems.
I have given a wide variety of applications of linear algebra. The lion's share are slanted toward science and engineering, however. Presenting applications can be tricky in that enough flavor of the origin of the application must be given to convince the student that the example is not bogus, yet not too much detail of the application must appear to scare away a novice. For example, the presentation of some linear equations arising in structures is the important point, not a minicourse in statics and dynamics. I believe that the applications have been given in appropriate detail and that the students will be able to see and handle the linear algebraic aspects of the applied examples once they are laid out.

Intended Audience:
Except for those sections with the word calculus in the section title, the reader need only be equipped with knowledge of the derivative and integral in an elementary fashion. I have put the deeper connections of calculus and linear algebra in these separate sections so that the interested reader can find them easily.

Calculus, Applications and Theory

Author : Kenneth Kuttler, Department of Mathematics, Brigham Young University
Pages : 908 pages
Publication Date : May 11, 2007

Excerpts from the Introduction:

Calculus consists of the study of limits of various sorts and the systematic exploitation of the completeness axiom. It was developed by physicists and engineers over a period of several hundred years in order to solve problems from the physical sciences. It is the language by which precision and quantitative predictions for many complicated problems are obtained. It is used to find lengths of curves, areas and volumes of regions which are not bounded by straight lines. It is used to predict and account for the motion of satellites. It is essential in order to solve many maximization problems and it is prerequisite material in order to understand models based on differential equations. These and other applications are discussed to some extent in this book.
It is assumed the reader has a good understanding of algebra on the level of college algebra or what used to be called algebra II along with some exposure to geometry and trigonometry although the book does contain an extensive review of these things. If the optional sections and non standard sections are not included, this book is fairly short. However, there is a lot of non standard material, including the big theorems of advanced calculus. I have also tried to give complete proofs of all theorems in one variable calculus and to at least give plausibility arguments for those in multiple dimensions with complete proofs given in appendices or optional sections.
I have done this because I am sick and tired of books which do not bother to present proofs of the theorems stated. For a serious student, mathematics is not about accepting on faith unproved assertions presumably understood by someone else but "beyond the scope of this book". It has become fashionable to care nothing about such serious students and to write books for the entertainment of those who care nothing for explanations. Serious students will find complete explanations here. Physical models are derived in the usual way through the use of differentials leading to differential equations which are introduced early and used throughout the book as the basis for physical models.
I expect the reader to be able to use a calculator whenever it would be helpful to do so. Some introduction to the use of computer algebra systems is also presented and there are exercises which require the use of some form of technology. Having said this, calculus is not about using calculators or any other form of technology. I believe that when the syntax and arcane notation associated with technology are presented too prominently, these things become the topic of study rather than the concepts of calculus. This is a book on calculus.
Pictures are often helpful in seeing what is going on and there are many pictures in this book for this reason. However, calculus is not about drawing pictures and ultimately rests on logic and definitions. Algebra plays a central role in gaining the sort of understanding which generalizes to higher dimensions where pictures are not available. Therefore, I have emphasized the algebraic aspects of this subject far more than is usual, especially those parts of linear algebra which are essential to understand in order to do multi-variable calculus.
I have also featured the repeated index summation convention and the usual reduction identities which allow one to discover vector identities.

Probability and Statistics by Example

Publisher: Cambridge University Press Number Of Pages: 372 Publication Date: 2005-11-07 ISBN / ASIN: 0521612330

Book Description:
Because probability and statistics are as much about intuition and problem solving, as they are about theorem proving, students can find it very difficult to make a successful transition from lectures to examinations and practice. Since the subject is critical in many modern applications, Yuri Suhov and Michael Kelbert have rectified deficiencies in traditional lecture-based methods, by combining a wealth of exercises for which they have supplied complete solutions. These solutions are adapted to needs and skills of students and include basic mathematical facts as needed.

G. W. Housner , & D. E. Hudson,«Applied Mechanics Dynamics, 2/e »
D, Van Nostrand Co ISBN: 1135123071 2nd edition 1980 399 pages djvu 4.7 MB

The present edition incorporates a number of revisions and additions which should improve its usefulness as a textbook without changing the basic organization or the general philosophy of presentation of the subject matter. The experience of the past few years at the California Institute of Technology and other schools indicates that the book has been useful to engineering students who wish to prepare for more advanced studies and applications of dynamics, and hence a new edition was felt to be justified.Among the additions and modifications the following may be mentioned to indicate the scope of the revision. The section on dimensional analysis has been rewritten and a brief treatment of the theory of models has been added. The section on impact problems has been revised, and a more extensive treatment of variable mass systems has been included. A more general discussion of the moment of momentum equations for systems of particles has been added, and the general momentum and energy equations for rigid bodies have been more completely developed. The discussion of rotation about a fixed point and gyroscopic motion has been expanded and somewhat more complex systems have been considered, including problems on the stability of rolling motion. The problem of longitudinal waves in an elastic bar is discussed, and a comparison is made between wave propagation techniques and vibration methods for such problems. The discussion of generalized coordinates and Lagrange's equations has been revised, and a general treatment of the problem of small oscillations of a conservative system has been added. The sections on the Calculus of Variations and Hamilton's Principle have been rewritten with some expansion.Over one hundred new problems have been added to increase the total number to some four hundred. All of the new problems have been thoroughly tested in classroom use. The number of illustrative examples has been increased and many of the original examples have been modified. As in the first edition, the main emphasis of the book is on particle and rigid-body dynamics, although some other aspects of the subject have been included to show how the methods of classical mechanics are applied to the various branches of engineering science. Some of these topics, such as fluid dynamics and the kinetics of gases, have been treated in a very brief fashion. Although the student will make a more complete analysis of these subjects in specialized courses, it is believed that the brief discussions will help him to acquire a broader view of the applied sciences. In all such instances care has been taken to use methods that can be extended later for more complete treatments, and the student has been informed of the limitationsof the analyses.
As a textbook the main emphasis has been on method and on development of fundamental principles. The problems form an essential part of the presentation, and important conclusions are sometimes given in problems and illustrative examples. The student should examine such problems and note the results, even if the details of the proofs are not carried through.
